Origin of the Doberman and the Rottweiler

Before talking about the differences between Dobermans and Rottweilers, it is important to keep in mind the basic traits of the two breeds. Starting with the Doberman, it is a dog originally from Germany in the 19th century. It was used for guarding in its beginnings, but, nowadays, it is common to have it at home as a companion dog, although it is also found defending properties. It is much more than a watchdog.

For its part, the Rottweiler is another of the best-known German breeds. Like the Doberman, it also emerged in the 19th century. It was a dog designed to keep livestock and property. At present he remains as a defender, but it is also common to find him as a companion dog or even doing assistance, for example in the police. It is a dog with aptitudes for learning, as well as for vigilance.

Rottweiler and Doberman physical characteristics

Although some people can confuse both breeds because they present similar colors, they are very different dogs in terms of physical complexion. Let's see below the characteristics of each one to understand the differences between Doberman and Rottweiler.

The Doberman is a very intelligent animal with a great capacity for learning. Regarding his appearance, he is large in size and with an athletic complexion, his weight ranges between 30-40 kg and the height at the withers is between 65-69 cm. At first glance, it is a much finer and more elegant dog than the Rottweiler, this being one of its main differences.

On the other hand, its short and shiny coat is found in the colors black and tan or brown and tan, in different shades of brown. Know all the characteristics of the Doberman in this tab: "Doberman pinscher ".

The appearance of the Rottweiler is more robust. As we say, at this point there is a difference between Doberman and Rottweiler, well, although both are large dogs, the rottweiler shows a stronger complexion and muscular, in addition to a very broad skull and neck. Thus, the Rottweiler usually reaches, and even exceeds, 50 kg. Regarding the height, it is somewhat shorter than the Doberman, since it measures about 58-69 cm at the withers. Although there will be specimens as tall as the Doberman, others can measure much less.

The rottweiler's coat is also short and its color is black and tan, no more. Visit the Rottweiler file to find out all its characteristics: "Rottweiler ".

Doberman and Rottweiler character

Unfortunately, both dogs convey an image of fierceness and aggressiveness to many people. Their use as guard dogs and their powerful appearance, their large size and, in the case of the Doberman, the cut of the ears that modify their expression has contributed to this portrait, a practice prohibited because it is cruel and totally unnecessary. But the reality is that there are no excessive differences between the Doberman and the Rottweiler in terms of temperament. Both well-socialized and well-mannered dogs will be balanced, affectionate and docile. They can live in homes with children and even with other animals.

¿Dobermans and Rottweilers are potentially dangerous dogs?

It is true that the indiscriminate breeding of both breeds has given rise to some specimens with a more unstable temperament, nervous, excessively shy, etc. Likewise, inadequate socialization and a lack of stimulation and education can alter the character of these dogs, causing behavior problems. But all these factors can also occur in other breeds, which we do not consider dangerous for this reason.

In any case, there is no difference between Dobermans and Rottweilers for the legislation. Both dogs can be part of the list of potentially dangerous dogs. This means that for their possession and maintenance a series of requirements are requested that must be assessed before thinking about adopting any of these copies.

Rottweiler or Doberman for guard?

Traditionally, both dogs have been associated with property defense. It is not unusual to find specimens of both breeds living on farms or in factories, alone and in the open, with the aim of deterring potential intruders. But, in general, there are differences between Dobermans and Rottweilers in this regard, since it is considered that the Rottweiler has a greater inclination towards this activity of guard and defense. It is also better adapted to inclement weather, although you have to know that no dog, whatever race it is, can replace an alarm. All of them are social animals that need family coexistence for their well-being. They can't always be alone. Nor can we expect a dog to carry out defense work or, in general, any other order, without proper and professional training..

Doberman and Rottweiler care

The short cloak of the Doberman it hardly requires care for its maintenance. On the other hand, it does not offer excessive protection against inclement weather, so it is not a very suitable breed for life outdoors. In fact, its large dimensions have not prevented it from adapting to living in apartments in the city. As for coexistence, you may have some conflict with other dogs, so you have to take great care in their socialization and in their education to prevent behavior problems.

Both in the care of the coat and in the possibility of adapting to life in the city, the sometimes problematic relationships with other dogs and the need for socialization and education, there are no excessive differences between Dobermans and Rottweilers. Perhaps the point where they do differ is that of physical activity. It is considered, although its appearance seems to indicate the opposite, that the rottweiler requires more physical exercise.

Doberman and Rottweiler Health

In general, since the two breeds of large dogs are, they will share the propensity to suffer some disorders, such as stomach torsion or joint problems. But there are also differences between Dobermans and Rottweilers in this regard. A) Yes, Dobermans have a tendency to suffer from heart problems. In the rottweiler, on the other hand, highlights his tendency to be overweight. Hence the need to exercise enough or not overindulge with food.

On the other hand, the Dobermans used to have their ears and tail amputated. The rottweiler only had its tail docked. Fortunately, this practice, without any justification in any race, is increasingly prohibited in more countries. In addition to the pain that dogs suffer during the postoperative period, their communication is seriously affected, since it is essential for them to identify the different positions adopted by both the tail and the ears..

Finally, the life expectancy of the Doberman is about 12 years. It differs little from that of the Rottweiler, which stands at about 11-12 years.
